Mastering Color in Photography

Color Calibration and White Balance

Mastering the art of attaining the correct color balance and exposure in photography especially when relying in ambient lighting can be challenging. A significant portion of my work revolves around acquiring accurate and uniform color results, with a particular emphasis on architectural subjects. The objective will always be to create a true-to-life colors banking on light and shadows.

Ensure white balance is adjusted correctly. It’s crucial to incorporate proper camera white balance to capture the accurate color temperature of the light surrounding your subject. I consistently carry an x-rite color checker with me during shoots, utilizing it as a reference sample to expedite color corrections. This approach enables me to assign specific color reference targets to my camera, streamlining the process across a large batch of photos for enhanced productivity.

Each individual possesses a unique artistic vision and preferences when it comes to creating images and I respect that fully. The art of color grading remains a fundamental aspect of photo editing, requiring a grasp of the principles of physics alongside a discerning eye for aesthetic harmony.

I took this photo earlier to seize the opportunity by the prevailing weather conditions in our area, which have been consistently overcast and cloudy for the past few days now. I find shooting in such climate conditions particularly appealing, as the prevalent overcast serves as a natural large soft box, diffusing light softly and creating a gentle illumination that enhances the overall ambiance of the scene.
